The Devil You Say
Aubrey Arbuthnot returns for another absurd supernatural adventure in 1920s England. The plot is more ambitious and the humor more outrageous than Strong Spirits, but an increasingly obnoxious protagonist and some unexpectedly cruel stereotypes diminish the fun.

Suffer a Witch to Die
A wonderfully obscure 1960s Gothic thriller about a widow transported into the body of her Puritan doppelgänger during the Salem witch trials. Eerie, inventive, and just a little too short for its own good.

The Witches
Twenty-eight pages into this literary tale of witchcraft, I surrendered to its relentlessly philosophical narrator. Not necessarily a bad book, but one whose storytelling style is spectacularly incompatible with mine.

Demon Drums
God-killing, magical drums, witches, shapeshifters, and flying dolphins. A fascinating island fantasy with far more ideas than its 240 pages can possibly accommodate.
